When Lithosphere transitions to post-quantum cryptography, users shouldn’t have to abandon their accounts to stay secure. Thanos Wallet is being built to carry accounts through that transition — from classical, to hybrid, to fully post-quantum — without losing what’s already there.

Cryptographic transitions are one of the hardest problems in deployed security infrastructure, and the reason is almost never technical. The algorithms are understood. The migration path is specifiable. The hard part is that the accounts, assets, and history accumulated on a network under the old cryptographic model do not automatically transfer to the new one. Users who want stronger security after a transition typically face a choice between migrating to a new account — losing continuity with their history and requiring them to move everything — or staying on the old account and accepting a security profile that is no longer optimal. Neither option is good. Both are common.

The same problem will eventually apply to every blockchain that currently relies on elliptic-curve cryptography, which is most of them. When post-quantum security becomes a meaningful priority rather than a future consideration, users on those networks will face that same choice: rebuild from scratch on a new account type, or stay where they are with cryptography that was not designed for the threat environment it now faces. The wallet, in most cases, will have no mechanism to help them navigate between those two options — because most wallets were built to manage keys, not to manage the transition between key types.

Thanos Wallet is being designed with this transition as a first-class concern. The intended path is structured in three stages. A Classical Account operates the way most blockchain accounts operate today — secured by elliptic-curve cryptography, familiar to any user who has held assets on any major network. A Hybrid Account adds a post-quantum signature alongside the classical one, so that valid authorization requires both — an attacker cannot compromise the account by defeating only one cryptographic system. A Post-Quantum Account completes the transition, running entirely on post-quantum primitives and no longer depending on elliptic-curve assumptions for its security.

What makes this meaningful is that it is designed as an upgrade path, not a replacement. The account carries forward through each stage. Assets do not need to be moved to a new address. History does not need to be abandoned. The user does not face a migration event that requires them to rebuild their on-chain presence from scratch. They step from one security profile to the next, with the wallet managing the cryptographic complexity underneath a familiar interface.

The hybrid stage is particularly important for how transitions actually work in practice. A network that moves directly from classical to post-quantum cryptography asks everyone to make a binary switch at the same time, under whatever time pressure caused the transition to become urgent. A network that supports a hybrid stage lets users accumulate experience with post-quantum authentication while the classical layer is still intact — so the transition happens in conditions of relative calm rather than reactive urgency. Support for hybrid accounts is not a compromise; it is the architecture that makes gradual, stable migration possible.

Most wallets will not be able to offer this because they were not built with cryptographic transitions in mind. They hold keys. They sign transactions. The assumption baked into their design is that the key type they were built for is the one that will remain relevant. Thanos Wallet is being built on a different assumption: that the cryptographic landscape will evolve, that users should not have to pay a continuity penalty when it does, and that the wallet’s job is to carry accounts through that evolution rather than leaving users to navigate it on their own.
