A lot of chains that claim to connect the crypto ecosystem are really just asking everyone else to join theirs

“Interoperability” gets used loosely enough in crypto that it’s worth stopping to ask what it actually requires. A lot of projects that market themselves around connecting different blockchains are really describing something narrower: a compatibility model, where communication between chains happens through a central hub or protocol that sets the rules everyone else has to follow to participate.

That’s a real capability, and it’s not nothing — chains built around a shared hub can talk to each other more easily than chains with no relationship at all. But it’s worth being clear-eyed about what it actually is: a way of getting other chains to adopt a specific standard in order to plug into a particular ecosystem, not a way of letting fundamentally different systems talk to each other on their own terms. The hub isn’t disappearing from the equation; it’s becoming the thing everyone else has to route through and conform to.

The distinction matters because the incentive underneath a compatibility model tends to be about growth of that specific ecosystem — attracting more chains to build around the hub’s standard — more than it’s about making blockchains in general easier to connect. That’s a reasonable business strategy for a protocol trying to grow its own footprint. It’s a different goal from actually solving cross-chain communication as a general problem.

A true interoperability model starts from a different premise: instead of asking every chain to adopt a shared standard set by a central hub, it builds trustless, cryptographic communication that doesn’t require one chain’s rules to become everyone else’s rules. Two systems that were never designed to be compatible with each other can still communicate, verify, and settle without either one having to restructure itself around the other’s protocol.

This is the model Lithosphere is built around: extending a hand to existing ecosystems like Ethereum, Cosmos, Polkadot, and others rather than asking them to adopt a Lithosphere-specific standard to participate. The goal isn’t pulling other chains into one ecosystem’s orbit — it’s building the cryptographic groundwork for decentralized systems that were never designed with each other in mind to still communicate reliably.

It’s a subtle distinction on paper and a significant one in practice. A hub-based compatibility model measures success by how many chains adopt its standard. A true interoperability model measures success by whether chains that never adopted anything in common can still talk to each other — which is a harder problem, and arguably the more honest version of what “interoperability” was supposed to mean in the first place.
